The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Solemnity of Our Lady assumed body and soul into heaven — the summer height of Marian devotion and a pledge of the resurrection of the flesh.

What we celebrate

August 15 is the Assumption: Mary taken body and soul into heavenly glory. The dogma, defined in 1950, names what the Church had long prayed — that the Mother of God does not know the corruption of the grave, and that our flesh has a destiny beyond decay.

How to keep the day

Hear Mass. Pray the Rosary. If your parish processes or blesses herbs in older custom, join it without embarrassment. This is a solemnity: treat the day as marked, not as ordinary Friday with a blue filter.

Gift guide

A well-made rosary, a worthy Marian image, or a book on Our Lady that refuses both cold minimalism and soft kitsch.

Gift guide

Assumption gifts favor the Rosary and Marian reverence without cuteness — a serious rosary, an image of Our Lady, flowers for a home shrine.
