The Passion of St. John the Baptist

Memorial of the Beheading of the Forerunner — the prophet who told the truth to power and paid with his life.

What we celebrate

August 29 is the Passion (Beheading) of St. John the Baptist. The Church honors the Forerunner not only at his nativity but in his death: truth spoken to Herod, a conscience that would not trim the law for a king’s convenience.

How to keep the day

Read Mark 6:14–29. Examine where you soften truth to keep comfort. Pray for prisoners and for those who suffer for naming sin without cruelty.

Gift guide

Scripture and prayer books that refuse flattery. If you give art, prefer the Baptist lean and severe — not salon soft-focus.

Gift guide

This memorial suits stark gifts — a Gospel, warfare prayers, nothing that makes martyrdom look decorative.
