St. James the Greater

Feast of the apostle and martyr — patron of pilgrims, first of the Twelve to drink the cup of Christ by the sword.

What we celebrate

July 25 is the feast of St. James the Greater, apostle and martyr. Spain’s pilgrim roads still run toward his name. The Church remembers a man who wanted glory and received a share in the Cross.

How to keep the day

Walk with intention. Pray for pilgrims. Read Acts 12:1–2 and ask whether your faith has ever cost you anything Herod would bother to notice.

Gift guide

Gear for a real pilgrimage, alms for a shrine, or a scallop for a man who needs to remember he is still on the way.

Gift guide

James gifts suit the road — a pilgrim shell, a walking rule, support for someone actually going to Compostela or on a local pilgrimage.
