Divine Office

What it is

The Divine Office is the Church's daily prayer, sanctifying the course of the day with psalms, canticles, hymns, Scripture, and intercessions. Clerics and religious are bound to it in ways proper to their state; the laity are urged to join as they can. It is liturgy—not private devotion only—even when prayed alone from a breviary or approved app.

The principal hours include the Office of Readings, Morning PrayerGlossaryMorning Prayer of the Divine Office—psalms of praise at daybreak, classically including the Benedictus. What it is not

The Divine Office is not a substitute for MassGlossaryThe Church's central act of worship—the Sacrifice of Calvary made present, and the sacrament of Christ's Body and Blood.. It is not "lectio for introverts" detached from the Church's public worship. It is not the same as a random psalm playlist; the rite has a structure, a calendar, and rubrics.

How a Catholic encounters it

Start with Morning Prayer or Compline. Keep a consistent hour before multiplying books. Pray with your lips when your mind wanders—the Church lends you her words.
