Acedia

What it is

Acedia is a capital vice: sorrow or disgust at the spiritual good God offers — prayer, the cell, the day’s duty. The desert fathers tied it to the daemonium meridianum, the noonday devil of Psalm 90/91. It is not naptime. It is the urge to flee the place where grace is asking you to stay.

What it is not

Not ordinary tiredness, and not the clinical depression that needs medical care. Monastic writers were describing a spiritual attack and a habit of the will, not a diagnosis.

How you encounter it

At noon when the rule feels pointless; when you open a dozen tabs instead of praying; when you leave the work unfinished because “nothing matters.” Remedies in the tradition: stay, work with your hands, pray short, refuse the flight. See The Noonday Devil.
