Propers

What it is

The propers are the parts of the MassGlossaryThe Church's central act of worship—the Sacrifice of Calvary made present, and the sacrament of Christ's Body and Blood. (or OfficeGlossaryThe Church's daily liturgy of psalms, hymns, and readings sanctifying the hours—also called the Liturgy of the Hours.) that change with the day or feast—as distinct from the Ordinary, which remains relatively stable (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei). At Mass this includes the entrance chant (introit), collect, readings, Gospel, offertory, Communion antiphonGlossaryA short scriptural or liturgical text sung or said before and after a psalm, canticle, or as a refrain in the Mass and Office., and other variable texts. They proclaim the mystery of the day.

What it is not

Propers are not optional "extras" for musicians. They are not the same as hymns arbitrarily chosen to fill silence—though hymns are often used in place of proper chants in common parish practice. They are not a museum interest for specialists alone; they are how the Roman rite speaks the feast.

How a Catholic encounters it

Open a missalGlossaryThe liturgical book containing the texts of the Mass—the priest's altar missal, or a hand missal for the faithful to follow.. Follow the introit and collect for the day. On a solemnity, notice how the texts shift. If your parish sings hymns at the entrance, you can still pray the proper antiphon from the missal. The propers train a man to hear what this day is for—not a generic Sunday template.
