The Poverello’s tomb
Assisi keeps the memory of St. Francis where he lived and died. The double basilica — lower church and upper — holds his tomb and the great fresco cycles that catechize the Franciscan life. Pilgrims come for poverty preached in stone: the Gospel taken literally enough to sting.
For the pilgrim
Keep silence in the lower church. Pray at the tomb before you photograph the frescoes. From Umbria, Rome’s confession continues at St. Peter’s if your road turns south.
