La Bonne Mère
Notre-Dame de la Garde stands on the highest natural point in Marseille — a limestone outcrop above the Old Port. Locals call her la Bonne Mère. The neo-Byzantine basilica (consecrated 1864) and the gilded Virgin on the belfry are the city's emblem; on the Assumption the hill fills with pilgrims.
This is not the archdiocesan cathedral on the waterfront. Come here for the Marian shrine, the view that teaches providence over a rough port city, and the ex-votos of sailors and the sick who asked the Mother to keep them.
For the pilgrim
