Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls
Major papal basilica over the tomb of St. Paul the Apostle — one of Rome’s four great pilgrimage churches.
The Apostle to the nations
Catholic tradition holds that this basilica stands over the burial of St. Paul. The long nave, the mosaic portraits of the popes, and the confession under the altar point to one claim: the Gospel Paul preached still binds the Church. Come for the tomb and for the continuity of the apostolic preaching.
For the pilgrim
Allow time for the cloister if it is open. Dress for a church. Complete the circuit with St. Peter’s, St. John Lateran, and Santa Maria Maggiore on the Roman Basilicas route.
