St. Ignatius of Loyola
Soldier turned founder of the Jesuits. Patron of spiritual exercises, retreats, and men who need a rule of discernment under fire.
Patron of the Society of Jesus, spiritual retreats, soldiers, discernment
Who he was
Íñigo López de Loyola was a Basque courtier and soldier until a cannonball shattered his leg at Pamplona in 1521. During a long convalescence he read the lives of the saints and found his ambition redirected. The man who had wanted worldly glory founded the Society of Jesus and gave the Church the Spiritual Exercises — a school of desire for men who refuse to drift.
Why men seek his intercession
Ignatius is the patron of ordered interior combat. Men recovering from pride, addiction, or a life built on image ask his help to learn the examen, to name consolation and desolation honestly, and to stop confusing impulse with calling. He understood ambition. He also understood surrender.
Traditional devotion
The Daily Examen — a brief evening review of the day under God’s eye — is Ignatius’s most portable gift. Five or ten minutes. Gratitude, review, sorrow, resolve. Pair it with a short morning offering and you have the skeleton of a layman’s rule.
Prayer
Symbols and iconography
Look for the IHS Christogram, a book of the Exercises, and sometimes discarded armor. The point is not that the soldier vanished — it is that the fight changed sides.
