St. Augustine of Hippo

Who he was
Aurelius Augustine was born in North Africa in 354. He chased brilliance, Manichaeism, and pleasure until the grace his mother had begged for years broke through in Milan. Baptized by Ambrose in 387, he became bishop of Hippo and one of the formative minds of the Latin Church. He died in 430 as Vandals besieged his city.
Why men seek his intercession
Augustine is the patron of the unfinished man — the one who knows the arguments and still will not kneel. Ask his help when intellect has become a hiding place, when chastity feels impossible, or when you need language honest enough for confession. He wrote theology with a convert’s scars still visible.
Traditional devotion
Read a page of the Confessions slowly — not as literature first, as prayer. His feast follows Monica’s for a reason: no Augustine without the tears that preceded him.
