Praying the St. Michael Prayer Like You Mean It
The Leonine prayer is short. That is not an excuse to rush it. How to pray it as a daily act of spiritual combat.
Why this prayer still matters
Pope Leo XIII gave the Church a short, sharp prayer after a vision of demonic assault upon the world. Whatever one makes of the private revelation, the prayer itself is orthodox, muscular, and needed. Evil is not a metaphor. Neither is protection.
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.
That first line is the whole program. You are in a battle. You ask a named defender to stand with you.
How to pray it without rushing
Stand or kneel. Do not mutter it while unlocking your phone. Speak the words. Mean the petition against "the wickedness and snares of the devil" — name the snare if you know it. End with Amen that costs you something: a resolve to avoid the near occasion you just named.
Make it a rule
Attach it to something you already do: after morning coffee, before leaving the house, at the end of night prayer. Consistency beats intensity. Michaelmas is a fine day to begin, but any Tuesday will do.
